When Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands on the 10th of May 1940, there were 140.000 Jewish men, women and children living here. Between July 15th 1942 and the 3rd of September 1944 more than 107.000 Jews were deported. Only 5.200 survived and
returned to the Netherlands from the nazi concentration camps. Auschwitz and Sobibor in Poland were death camps built to carry out mass murder. For 95.000 Jews from the Netherlands these camps were their final destination. Fewer than 500 survived.
Auschwitz has come to symbolise this attempt to destroy the Jewish people.
