Creating a memorial
In 1977, the simple memorial stone in the Amsterdam Ooster Cemetery was replaced by the Mirror Memorial, designed by the writer and sculptor Jan Wolkers. In 1993, the Auschwitz memorial was expanded and, together with the urn containing ashes from
Auschwitz, it was moved to the Wertheim Park in Amsterdam. Since then, the annual Auschwitz Herdenking (Auschwitz Memorial) takes place at this venue.
Never Again Auschwitz
By now it is more that 60 years since the end of the Second World War and most of the survivors have aged considerably. Younger people have become active in the Committee. The work of the Dutch Auschwitz Committee continues even so many years after the
war. Never Again Auschwitz means taking a firm stand against current expressions of racism, hate of foreigners, and anti-Semitism.
The Dutch Auschwitz Committee is affiliated with the International Auschwitz Committee (German: IAK). Both Jewish and non-Jews organisations from 19 countries are affiliates of IAK, as well as the German Documentation and Cultural Centre of the German Sinti and Roma.
