The 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz had to be commemorated in an appropriate manner. Three weeks prior to the ceremony, a poster campaign against racism was started in Amsterdam. The aim was to learn a lesson from the past and to generate awareness and tolerance among all the different population groups in today's society.
The Dutch Auschwitz Committee absolutely wants to make sure that the past does not become a mere historic concept engrained only in the memory of the older generation. Developments in society in recent times clearly indicate that the occurrences from the past are not pure history, but are still very relevant.
The message NO MORE RACISM, NEVER AGAIN AUSCHWITZ is focussed mainly on today's youth. Furthermore, NEVER AGAIN AUSCHWITZ must send a clear signal at all times to all target groups.
The provocative posters were designed to reflect all the aforementioned objectives. The campaign was deployed on a large scale in the streets of Amsterdam, in trams and metro stations, and on the AT5 broadcasting station. The approach was to create an impact during the three weeks prior to the commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz. The commemoration ceremony was on the 30th of January.
