On 11 September 1941, the NSB leader Mussert founded the Nederlandsche SS for several reasons. One of the reasons was to indirectly recruit volunteers for the Waffen SS, who would fight at the front lines. More than 25,000 Dutch volunteers wore the German uniform during the war, usually the Waffen SS uniform.
