The hundreds of thousands of prisoners in the SS camps were mainly forced to work in SS undertakings and in private companies, including the largest German enterprises. Organising this was the responsibility of the SS Verwaltungsamt, which was part of the SS Hauptamt, which in February 1942 was turned into SS-Wirtschafts und Verwaltungshauptamt (SS-WVHA).
