During the war more than 25,000 people - mainly Jews - were deported from the Mechelen camp to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The last transport, which was the 26th transport from the camp, departed on 13 July 1944. Roma prisoners were also deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
