Joseph Johann Kotälla (1908-1979) was the chief administrator at the Amersfoort camp. He was SS sub-camp commander and in his position he replaced camp commander Berg during his absence. Kotälla is better known as the tyrant of Amersfoort because of his notoriously sadistic behaviour in the camp. He mostly mistreated Jews and priests and often participated in firing squads. In 1949, Kotälla was sentenced to death, but his verdict was changed into life imprisonment. He was imprisoned in Breda with Willy Lages, Ferdinand aus der Fünten, and Franz Fisher (the Breda four). Kotälla died in prison.
