The councils of the pre-war Jewish communities ran the synagogues and the cemeteries, provided Jewish education, appointed rabbis, etc. All local Jewish communities are part of an umbrella network, such as the Dutch-Jewish Congregation, the League of
Liberal Religious Jews, or the Portuguese-Jewish Community.
