Ashkenazi Jews are also called Ashkenazim or High German Jews. These Jews originated from middle and east Europe and established themselves in the Netherlands from the beginning of the seventeenth century. The term High German referred to the language they spoke in their original surroundings. That was one of the components of Yiddish, the language spoken by the Ashkenazi Jews upon their arrival in the Netherlands.
